Richard CHRISP New Zealand b. 1944 Richard Chrisp's interest in art began at Wanganui Collegiate School and continued at Victoria University. In February 1984 he began painting with Agnes Wood and had his first solo exhibition at Highwic in December of that year. Ten years in Europe in the 1970s, based in London and Paris, established a love of travel. In 1984 Chrisp exhibited in Rio de Janeiro and in 1986 he attended the Summer School for watercolours at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Giverny, France. Chrisp's painting is influenced by his admiration for the works of Matisse, Dufy and Cezanne in particular. Warm and calligraphic, with delicate line and washes of colour, his works shows a dedicated approach to watercolour painting. As Chrisp says: "I know for certain half an hour after I've started a painting whether it's going to work or not. I try and let my feelings flow and prefer not to labour things". His subject matter includes still life, landscape and interiors. |
